A little fashion lesson: who was Charles James?
So ladies: how did you like looking at all the beautiful Met Ball dresses? You were probably just as excited as we were, wishing your name was Suki, Stella or Beyoncé, and pondering about what you would wear to a party this size.
Reason those gals got it right was partly because of Anna Wintours wish to have a Charles James dresscode, which totally brought out the best in them. But ehm, who wás Charles James exactly? Let’s be honest here, his name did not ring a bell immediately, so we’re glad that The Costume Institute is hosting an exhibit on the British designer (we knew that).
And rightly too, because while the designer might not be a household name like, say, Yves Saint Laurent, he was a huge influential in 40’ and ’50 New York, designing the most amazing ball gowns. James was close friends with Cecil Beaton, was highly respected by Christian Dior and was often dubbed a great friend of the French Couture.
The exhibition covers James’ entire career, including a collection of 100 pieces with all of his major work. Think tulle, think satin, think bustles and bosoms. Or just think Met Ball. [EH]
